Golf Newfoundland

Flying foursome competition

Courses in the Western Region:

A land with thousands of miles of coastline, endless forest, and ancient mountains. Western Newfoundland runs from Port aux Basques to the top of the Great Northern Peninsula where challenging golf with spectacular scenery await visitors to this region of the province. This is a place of a 1.25-billion-year-old geological history as old as the planet and a human history going back 4,500 years. Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers more than 65 kilometres of mountain hiking.

From leisurely strolls to challenging treks through rock formations that came from the centre of the earth. Climb Gros Morne itself and view the spectacular landscape of mountains and fjords carved by glaciers and formed by tectonic upheaval. A National Historic Site at Port au Choix introduces the intriguing prehistory of the province and the Maritime Archaic people with their elaborate burial rituals, and the Dorset Eskimos with their uniquely tiny tools. At L'Anse aux Meadows, you'll come across the grassy field where the Norse first settled the New World. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Parks Canada has reconstructed a Viking village. Experience life five centuries before Columbus. Come share the great pride Newfoundlanders take in their history and embrace the down-home friendliness of our west coast.

Museums in Port aux Basques, Cow Head and St. Anthony tell of the trials and triumphs of the people who settled this part of the province. The northern half of the west coast is The French Shore where for more than 300 years French fishermen and their descendants have maintained a distinct culture and kept their language alive. For a holiday filled with great theatre events - from Broadway hits to locally written plays - the Stephenville Festival is just the ticket. Corner Brook is an excellent base from which to explore the entire Western region. Set between the Long Range Mountains and the open sea, Corner Brook is as alive in winter as summer with a carnival of snowy fun centred around Marble Mountain - the best skiing east of the Rockies.

The Western Region is a special place of natural beauty and natural history, and, like all of Newfoundland and Labrador, the very best of the great outdoors.
