At L'Anse aux Meadows, you'll come across the grassy field where the Norse first settled the New World. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Parks Canada has reconstructed a Viking village. Museums in Port aux Basques, Cow Head and St. Anthony tell of the trials and triumphs of the people who settled this part of the province. The northern half of the west coast is The French Shore where for more than 300 years French fishermen and their descendants have maintained a distinct culture and kept their language alive. For a holiday filled with great theatre events - from Broadway hits to locally written plays - the Stephenville Festival is just the ticket. Corner Brook is an excellent base from which to explore the entire Western region. Set between the Long Range Mountains and the open sea, Corner Brook is as alive in winter as summer with a carnival of snowy fun centred around Marble Mountain - the best skiing east of the Rockies.
